The mid to late 60s was a period of change for blues music, with full amplification the only way to have a chance of an R\u0026amp;B hit. A band needed an electric guitar, drums and often a harmonica played through an amp for a deliberately distorted effect. The concept of the blues guitar hero came into effect with artists whose dexterity encapsulated their appeal. After B. B. King came Buddy Guy (playing here on his own and as part of Junior Wells' Chicago Blues Band), Otis Rush, Freddie King and increasingly influential white guitarists such as Duane Allman (who plays with Wilson Pickett and Johnny Jenkins as well as The Allman Brothers Band), Mike Bloomfield (included here with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Electric Flag and with Al Kooper) and Ry Cooder (here with Captain Beefheart and solo). Soul artists including Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Johnnie Taylor paid tribute to soul's blues roots and as America's black youth increasingly preferred the sound of Motown, white youth adopted the blues, discovered through English bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds and later Cream and Led Zeppelin. Robert \"Mack\" McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee ofthe blues, stepped into this world and became one of it's most devout advocates and documentarians.By photographing Black and Latino Texans and their neighborhoods, as well as recording andinterviewing musicians-many of whom never stepped foot into a proper recording studio-McCormickendeared and eventually embedded himself into these communities. It is similar to the previous albums in that it features orchestral, instrumental and chamber music with inspiration from nature and also showing the skills of the composer in various genres. Rosana sings first: a sad song about unrequited love. Hasse praises her warmly for singing from the heart, whereas Marcello is just puzzled by her sudden ability to find the correct tone. She then sings a joyful song about a nightingale, which leaves both Hasse and Marcello captivated. Most recently she was commissioned by Dubai Opera to write an orchestral work for the first BBC Proms in Dubai in March 2017. This lead to her writing the 6 minute work Flare, for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, based on a short story called Oil Field, by Saudi writer Mohammed Hasan Alwan. Joanna has been Composer in Residence, at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge from 2015 through to 2020 and during that time has written a number of choral works for the college choir and the college organ. She is a Co-Founder of Choir Fest Middle East in Dubai, an annual celebration of the region's choral music scene which is reached it's eighth edition in March 2020. When we take a look at the works by Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Hans Krása, Viktor Ullmann or Erwin Schulhoff, we can perceive a stylistically very similar course, conceivable against the given background as a 'Prague School' (as a counter-movement to the 'Viennese School'). In Schulhoff's early works, the features are a late Romantic approach influenced by Reger that later developed with an emphasis on rhythm in the direction of Expressionism and Neo-Classicism, also including jazz elements. The starting point is the 'Don Juan' story, but the underlying idea in Beneš' and Schulhoff's work is not to present the colourful seducer, but the fate of a man driven by his desires and needs who cannot even remotely find happiness and peace in constancy. Despite being initially interested in the text the composer eventually rejected it, put off by it's unfathomable symbolism. However, in the summer of the following year the score of Wagner's Siegfried pro-vided inspiration for fresh and innovative harmonic ideas, which he decided to include in a work dealing with motifs of black magic. With the help of his daughter Sofia, he wrote his own script based on Petrovsky's original, and as early as in spring of 1902 he had a one-act opera in three scenes ready - Kashchey the Immortal - which was successfully staged in Moscow before the year had ended. Today Lortzing's name continues to appear in the opera performance repertoire mostly only in association with Zar und Zimmermann or Der Wildschütz, but during his lifetime he was known far and wide not only as a composer but also as a librettist, actor, singer, and conductor. It was Lortzing himself who wrote the libretto for Zum Groß-Admiral, his tenth full-length opera. Composed in Vienna in 1847 and premiered in Leipzig during the same year, this work, like Regina, was born of the spirit of revolution - and completely vanished from performance programs after the revolts of 1848-49. Lortzing, an ardent admirer of Mozart, paid homage to him with the full-length work Szenen aus Mozarts Leben in 1832, and his veneration for this Viennese classical composer is frequently in audible evidence in his music.
